Carline Championship Hits Avalon On Saturday Night
NASR National Office posted Thursday January 14, 2010.
After a well deserved break to recover from the three consecutive nights of competition that comprise the APCO Tri-City Series, teams gather at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway this Saturday night (January 16) for round eight of the 2009/2010 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series, proudly sponsored by Bergmeier Engineering. Part of the series schedule since the inaugural series in 2006/2007, the Avalon track always provides great racing and, given the narrow margin at the top of the leader board, this weekend will seemingly be no exception.
Matt Pascoe currently holds a 67-point lead over defending champion Darren Kane in the championship chase and the Queensland duo are expected to again be at the forefront of the results when the chequer falls in the 35-lap feature race. In fact, Queensland drivers dominate the series standings at the moment with Steve Jordan continuing to occupy third spot through sheer consistency, while Jamie McHugh’s Warrnambool victory has propelled him into fourth overall.
South Australia’s Dave Gartner sits fifth overall and has been consistent without featuring on the podium, a situation he will be desperate to reverse on Saturday night. Two-time national champ Kevin Purton is still chasing an elusive NSSS feature win and, having qualified on pole position at Warrnambool, has every reason to be confident of piloting his Ford Falcon into victory lane at Avalon. Wayne Brims is the only other member of the top ten to enjoy the spoils of a feature race victory so far in the 2009/2010 series, however he is relinquishing his seat this weekend to two-time series champion Wayne Randall, boosting the championship hopes of Michael Nicola, Sam Hughes and Trent Wilson, along with the rest of the 20+ contracted drivers.
Meanwhile, other non-contracted drivers already confirmed are Terry White, Craig Lockwood and Danny Amato. However, with nominations remaining open until 4.30pm on race day, additional entries are expected to take on the series regulars.
In addition to the championship fight, the battle for Clearview Towing Mirrors Rookie of the Year honours and the East Coast Traffic Control Top Privateer are also hotting up with just three rounds of competition remaining. In the rookie ranks, three of the contenders are in the top ten with Purton currently leading Hughes, Wilson, Clayton Pyne and Graeme Elliot. The privateer points currently see McHugh leading the way over Purton, Wilson, Pyne, Wayne Miles and Des Korn.
With a strong support program that includes the Australian Speedcar Grand Prix and the return of the Great Aussie Dunny Derby, a huge night is guaranteed for competitors and fans alike. Gates open at 4.00pm, Super Sedan hot laps from 5.45pm with racing from 7.00pm.
