Brims Back In Form
NASR National Office posted Saturday January 9, 2010.

Round five of the 2009/2010 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series at Hamilton’s Western Speedway tonight saw Wayne Brims get his championship chase back on track with an impressive win. After qualifying his Brims Coastal Cement Rocket-Pontiac on the outside front row, Brims took over the front running in the early stages of the race and protected his lead throughout the 35-lap event. Brisbane’s Steve Jordan finished in second spot, with Matt Pascoe annexing third and moving to the top of championship standings.

Michael Nicola (National Warranty Company Rocket-Pontiac) continued his consistent run of results to finish fourth overall, while Tasmania’s Sam Hughes finished fifth, his second such result at this venue in two years. Kevin Purton was next best, ahead of Dave Gartner and Wayne Randall, who used the outside to great effect in advancing from position 17. Clayton Pyne and Tony Barkimore rounded out the top ten in an entertaining race that saw 19 of the 20 starters still running at the finish.

Lachlan Onley and Trent Wilson – who was hampered by a flat left front tyre for much of the journey – were next in line, followed by Ashley Bergmeier, Jamie McHugh, Bill Miller, Shane Best, Chris Bussey, Trevor Ware and Brad Smith. Lucas Roberts was the only casualty following a clash with Pyne in turn one, while a power steering failure prevented series leader Darren Kane from taking his place on the grid after transferring from the B Main.

The opening laps produced plenty of action as both McHugh and Jordan took turns at leading before Brims moved to the front. Hughes started strongly, surging around the outside into third position at one stage before being shuffled back by Jordan and McHugh, who qualified on pole position. Unfortunately for McHugh (Miami Smash Repairs Sweet-Dodge), a clash in turn one with Hughes and Pascoe saw him banished to the back.

Once in front, Brims was always in control, oblivious to the action that was unfolding behind him. There were positional changes galore behind the top three, with Randall, Gartner and Onley advancing through the field.

Heat winners on the night included Roberts, McHugh, Best, Jordan, Pascoe, Randall, Nicola, Hughes and Pyne. The B Main took an eternity to complete before Bergmeier ultimately prevailed ahead of Onley, Randall and Kane, while Ware, Bussey and Smith so transferred to the main event.
