The concept of a National Super Sedan Series was officially endorsed in March 2005 at the Speedway Sedans Australia (SSA/ASCF) national conference.

As a joint venture between SSA/ASCF and the National Association of Speedway racing, the aim was to introduce and develop into the National Speedway Calendar, a professionally managed series for Super Sedans with a focal point for television, media, sponsorship, corporate involvement and the subsequent improved profile for Super Sedans.
It was agreed that the inaugural Series would be planned for 2005/06 Season and so the following months were used to organize the initial series, including race dates, contracted drivers, budgets, sponsorship, and format.

Both the SSA/ASCF and NASR Boards were presented with the budgets and other plans in September 2005 and both Boards gave financial commitments for the inaugural series.
The series began at Avalon Raceway, Geelong on the 7th of January 2006 and concluded with a black tie presentation dinner in Adelaide. Queenslander Wayne Randall was crowned the new champion and retained his title when the series expanded from six to eight rounds the following season.

Since its inception, the National Super Sedan Series has been an overwhelming success, attracting big fields, large crowds and significant media exposure for competitors and participating sponsors.

The series has played a significant role in the growth of Super Sedan racing nationally and in 2007 Carline Mufflers identified the benefits of being associated with such a successful national competition and became the naming rights sponsor for the series third season.

National Carline Manager David Atherton declared that “Carline is very happy to have the chance to be involved with one of the most exciting forms of motor sport in Australia. The National Super Sedan Series is a fantastic event, which is going from strength to strength, with some great cars and drivers. That’s what Carline is all about, cars and the people who drive them”.

The Carline Mufflers Group consists of over 150 stores across Australia. To locate your nearest Carline store, visit the official website at www.carline.com.au or phone 1800 227 546.

Queensland’s Michael Doblo came from nowhere during the first half of the Series after a number of finishes outside of the top 10 to reach magnificent form in the last four rounds, finishing 3rd at Avalon and then claiming the final three rounds at Hamilton, Mt Gambier and Murray Bridge.

The final three round wins clinched the title for Doblo aboard the Pontiac Grand Prix over Wayne Brims and Jamie McHugh. In fact going into the final round, seven drivers could have mathematically won the championship.

The Ocean tyres team celebrated their change in fortunes over the nine day period which ultimately won Doblo the Championship, with Doblo giving an amusing and rousing speech after accepting the Championship trophy from Carline National Manager David Atherton at the black tie Presentation Dinner.

 Carline N S S S Schedule Confirmed

An expanded schedule of events for the 2008/2009 Carline National Super Sedan Series will see the series return to NSW with the inclusion of the newly revamped Dubbo Speedway, while Warrnambool in Victoria has also been confirmed to host a round.

The NSSS Working Party, who met last week in Melbourne to discuss and plan all aspects of the series, are happy with the final schedule after some challenging scheduling problems.

No less than fifteen tracks were considered for rounds, with one track requesting a second round, further confirming the success of the series in its first three years.

However the Working Party of drivers, car owners, officials & media representatives were mindful of the growth of the series and the effect a higher number of rounds would have on local club racing and the number of drivers able to commit to NSSS.

With an increase to ten rounds, the series will again start in Queensland on Dec 27 with three Queensland rounds held in the space of five days, prior to the series heading south in early January.

A change to previous years will see Brisbane International Speedway conduct the opening round, prior to the cars heading to Rockhampton two days later on Monday 29 December. Toowoomba will then host the traditional New Year’s Eve round to round out the Queensland leg.

While this change may disadvantage cars based north of Brisbane, it will prove beneficial to other teams, who in previous years have had to miss Christmas at home, or depart their southern bases on Christmas Day, just to get to Rocky in time for the first round.

“Starting in Brisbane is advantageous for most, as the extra eight hours to Rockhampton makes all the difference only two days after Christmas,” explained NASR General Manager Tim McAvaney.

“It will also be a lot easier for teams and fans who can now fly into Brisbane on the day of the first round, without the extra time needed to gain another transfer to Rocky.”

Three days after the teams finish their commitments in Queensland will see Dubbo hold its round on Saturday January 3. This has been made possible through the hard work of Darren Anning who has led an enthusiastic team in giving the Dubbo venue a major facelift.

A new concrete wall and catch fence, new spectator mounds and a reshaped racing surface with a heap of banking should see new records broken on the night.

The series will then head down to Southwest Victoria six days later for three nights of great Super Sedan Action. The historical “Tri-City” concept has been reborn and will provide a highlight for the series.

Hamilton will conduct round 5 on Friday 9 January, followed by Mt Gambier in SA on Saturday 10 January and the inclusion of the banked Warrnambool circuit on Sunday 11 January.

Avalon will then conduct the eighth round the following week on Saturday 17 January, prior to a two month break for teams to regroup and run other major races on the calendar, including the traditional Tasmanian events and the National Title in Lismore.

Mildura will host the penultimate round on Friday 20 March, while the Grand Final will again be hosted by Murray Bridge the following night, Saturday 21 March.

The scheduling of the final NSSS weekend on 20/21 March will also assist teams wishing to contest the Hammerdown events in WA the following week.

“We are extremely pleased with how the series is progressing,” explained McAvaney.

“We are now really starting to establish some traditional dates and a geographical flow, with only minor changes. It is great that fans and the teams know we will be in Queensland after Christmas and head south immediately afterwards. While there just are not enough weekends in January to accommodate the expansion of rounds, a second swing in March does open up other opportunities which we will take further advantage of in the future.”

Further information on all aspects of the series will be released in the coming weeks.
